QM hosted the National Council of Young Women Conference on Monday 30 September 2019. The theme of the conference, which brought together girls from schools across Yorkshire and the North East, was ‘Women in Law’. Three external speakers, all prominent, successful women representing a variety of disciplines in the Legal sector, delivered presentations alongside three QM Sixth Form girls in celebration of 100 years of women’s suffrage. The profile of women’s rights has never been higher on the political agenda and the discussions touched upon what might be next for women around the world.Guest speakers included Rachel Di Clemente, Legal Services Director, Minster Law; Mini Setty, Partner, Langleys Solicitors and Rachael Davies, Trainee Solicitor, Langleys Solicitors. The speakers talked about their motivation to get involved in law and their experiences touching upon issues affecting women in today’s society. The speakers shared why they chose a career in the legal sector, the challenges they experienced along the way and how they overcame these.Now a firm fixture in the QM calendar and building on the success of previous years, the School welcomed girls from a number of independent and state schools. The presentations were designed to stimulate discussion and debate, bringing the speakers and girls together to have an open and honest conversation about women’s rights. Focusing on modern society’s issues affecting women, discussions touched upon issues affecting women around the world.Findings from the conference will be fed through to the National Council of Women who will meet later in the week and conclusions fed through to Westminster with a view to informing and influencing policy.
